Summary:Â A New York Times Most Anticipated Nonfiction Book of 2026
âSharp and provocative from beginning to end, Aristocracy, American Style is certain to spark debate in the age of the billionaire president.â âT. J. Stiles, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt and Custerâs Trials: A Life on the Frontier of a New America
A leading historian confronts the myth of American meritocracy and our enduring reverence for the uber-richâand reveals how the worship of wealth corrodes democracy
Americans are taught to see aristocracy as everything we are not. Yet from the Revolution forward, the nation has cultivated elites in all but nameâdynasties of wealth, pedigree, and corporate powerâwhile praising them as proof the system works. In Aristocracy, American Style, bestselling historian Nancy Isenberg shows that the feel-good myths of the self-made man and âopportunity for allâ have not simply distracted us; they have supplied a lasting logic that launders privilege across generations.
Drawing on public policy, popular culture, and political rhetoric, Isenberg exposes the rituals and reinventions that have long protected the most privileged among us. Ranging from Gilded Age robber barons to modern moguls and influencers, from Brahmins to nepo babies, she demonstrates how American elites have long borrowed aristocratic formsâcrests reborn as logos, courts reborn as corporate suites, noblesse oblige reborn as naming rightsâwhile media infrastructures keep us awed by scandal and celebrity churn. What emerges is a map of American power hiding in plain sight.
From the racetracks and jockey clubs of early America to the halls of the Ivy League and the red carpets of Hollywood, Aristocracy, American Style reframes todayâs inequality as the predictable outcome of an old, distinctly American regime: one that thrives under democratic slogans while narrowing democratic possibility and teaching a republic to mistake prestige for merit.
Reviews:
âIn Nancy Isenbergâs bestselling White Trash, she told the four-hundred-year history of class in America from below. Now she offers a sweeping look at the top, from Gilded Age gentlemenâs clubs to todayâs professional sports. . . . Sharp and provocative from beginning to end, Aristocracy, American Style is certain to spark debate in the age of the billionaire president.â
âT. J. Stiles, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt and Custerâs Trials: A Life on the Frontier of a New America
âMesmerizing, illuminating, and seriously disorienting, Aristocracy, American Style gives us a completely different account of American history and culture than anything weâve grown accustomed to. . . . This book is an impressively researched and beautifully written public service announcement urging us to look inside Americaâs hidden and entrenched class structure.â
âCongressman Jamie Raskin (MD-8), author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy
âThose fighting class oppression in the United States face the maddening task of proving its existence, long obfuscated by our myth of meritocracy. With Aristocracy, American Style, Nancy Isenberg helpfully supplies centuries of evidence.â
âSarah Smarsh, author of National Book Award winner Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth
âIsenbergâs astute examination illuminates how the craving for not solely wealth but status-driven power and far-reaching influence [has] shaped our contemporary society. In thorough and accessible prose, she conveys how what we understand as the ânaturalâ courses of business, politics, and the distribution of wealth are anything butâa valuable realization if there is to be any hope of creating a more equitable future. A richly detailed analysis of class systems with as much relevance to today as at the time of our nationâs founding.â
âKirkus Reviews (starred review)
â[A] penetrating dissection of the American class system . . . This essential history stares the rigidity of the American class system in its face.â
âPublishers Weekly (starred review)
âIsenberg deftly argues that the idea of America as a place where anyone can âmake it bigâ has been disproven by centuries of dominance by the wealthy few. . . . Ultimately, Isenberg demonstrates that the American upper class is only getting smaller and more wealthy with every passing day.
